grey corries and Aonachs guided walks
Grey Corries | Stob Ban | Easian Ridge
East of Fort William, beyond Ben Nevis & Càrn Mòr Dearg lay this selection of stunning mountains. From ‘The Aonachs’ to the Eassians, with the Grey Corries in between!
The Aonachs of Aonach Mor and Aonach Beag are well known not only for their walking & superb winter climbing but for being the home of the Nevis Range. A snow sports centre through winter and mountain bike park in summer, playing host to one of the Mountain Bike World Cup rounds. The walk for the Aonachs is however quite often actually taken from the South and Glen Nevis, although you can take the Nevis Range Gondola up if you prefer a more Alpine feel and quick hit for the day.
The Grey Corries sit just beyond the Aonachs and are a classic ‘big’ day out for walkers offering up 3 or 4 Munros in a single day if you tag on Stob Ban at the start or end of the day. The ridges link beautifully together making for a fine outing with superb views across the surrounding mountains.
The Easians Ridge is just beyond the Grey corries and well seen from them, particularly Stob Ban. It is a fine walk with the marvellous Loch Trieg to directly to the east between them and next Munros of Stob Coire Sgriodain & Chno Dearg.
Grey Corries
Join us on this long and challenging day where we will take on the 3 Munros of the Grey Corries.
· Stob Choire Claurigh
· Stob Coire an Laoigh
· Sgùrr Chòinnich Mòr
The peaks are named for their grey appearance when viewed from the surrounding area. This is due to the quartzite screes on them. We walk along this fantastic ridgeline which offers superb views of the surrounding areas; Mamores, Easians, Aonachs and of course Ben Nevis.
Fitness: This is a very long mountain day and a tough walk. Good hill fitness is required.
Location: Junction beyond Killiechonate
Duration: 9 - 11 hours
Stob Ban (Grey Corries)
Hidden away behind the bulk of the Grey Corries, Stob ban is the 4th Munro in the range and done as a single Munro walk. This pointy peak, ‘the white peak’, shares its name with another Stob Ban just along the glen in the Mamores range.
On the way, we pass the Lairig Leacach bothy located at the base of the mountain, before ascending the ridge to the summit and retracing our path to enjoy the views once more.
Fitness: This is a reasonably long day on good tracks mostly but with a steep climb to the summit. Reasonable hill fitness is required.
Location: Junction beyond Killiechonate
Duration: 6-8 hours
Easians Ridge
The Munros of Stob a' Choire Mheadhoin and Stob Coire Easian, of which the ridge is known by are a fantastic day out, with superb views from the summits. The walk is out and back, initially following the edge of Loch Trieg before ascending onto the mountains. There is a small section of steeper ground and some light scrambling but nothing to get you onto Meall Cian Dearg on route to the first Munro. From there you are following the broad ridge enjoying the views back over into the Creag Meagaidh area. From the summits, particularly the later, you get superb views back over to the Grey Corries, as well as into the remote area around Corrour Station & Munro of Beinn na Lap.
Fitness: This is a reasonably long day including out and back over 1 of the summits. Reasonable hill fitness is required.
Location: Parking on Fersit Road
Duration: 7-8 hours
